What Do The Warning Lights In My Car Mean?

The following are the most common warning lights used by car manufacturers. Not all warning lights are universal. Always refer to your owner's manual when you're not 100% sure what the light indicates.

Check Engine Light
The Check Engine, more formally known as the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is a signal from the car's engine computer that something is wrong. If the Check Engine light comes on and it's steady rather than flashing, have the engine checked immediately.

Oil Pressure Warning
This light will illuminate when the oil pressure sensor detects low oil pressure. The vehicle's engine should be switched off immediately to aoid severe engine damage and the oil level checked to ensure correct quantity in the engine.

Coolant Warning Light
If you see the coolant light show up on your dashboard, it could mean coolant levels are running low, so check the gauge on the side of the coolant tank under the bonnet and top up if necessary.

Battery Charging Alert
Indicates voltage level is below normal level and the vehicle's charging system is not functioning properly. Check battery terminals, alternator belt, and battery condition.

Brake System Alert
Indicates one of three possible conditions: parking brake is on; problem with the braking system/brake fluid is low, or ABS problem. Check brake fluid and make sure the parking brake is fully released. If the problem is in the ABS system, it may need a professional diagnosis.

ABS Warning Light
When the ignition is switched on, the light illuminates briefly to confirm that the system is operational. If it illuminates when driving, it indicates a malfunction. Have this checked as soon as possible.

Airbag Warning Light
If this light stays illuminated after startingHealth Fitness Articles, it indicates that the vehicle has found a fault in the airbag system and the computer has set a code. Professional repair of the supplemental restraint system is highly recommended.
